Empowering Wisconsin Pantries to Provide Safer, Healthier Food for All
Food pantries across Wisconsin strive to meet community needs, but they often face challenges in providing food that is both safe and nutritious. To address these concerns, the Safe and Healthy Food Pantries Project was created, equipping pantries with the tools, resources, and guidance they need to elevate food safety standards and nutritional quality for their guests. Through this initiative, many pantries have made impactful changes, strengthening the health and well-being of their communities.
CHALLENGE
Food pantries in Wisconsin encountered difficulties in ensuring that their food offerings were both safe to consume and nutritionally beneficial. Many lacked the resources or training needed to meet food safety requirements, and as a result, pantry guests faced a higher risk of foodborne illness and limited access to healthier food choices.
APPROACH
In response, the Safe and Healthy Food Pantries Project developed a comprehensive toolkit with best practices, assessment tools, and customizable action plans. The project offered training that guided pantry staff through essential aspects of safe food handling, storage, and distribution. Additionally, the toolkit promoted healthier food options, helping pantries prioritize items that support overall guest wellness.
OUTCOME
With the adoption of these best practices, food pantries have markedly improved both the safety and nutritional quality of their offerings. Pantries have reduced the risk of foodborne illness and introduced more nutritious choices, positively impacting guests’ health. This transformation has been well-received, with pantry staff reporting increased confidence in their ability to provide safer food and receiving positive feedback from their communities. The project has fostered a stronger culture of wellness, setting a new standard for pantry operations across Wisconsin.
